Expertise: Pool Construction
With the constant building of new homes and renovations on existing ones at the Jersey Shore, more homeowners are insisting on having a swimming pool. We reached out to Bryan Hull of Del Val Pools & Spas, who builds pools throughout the tri-state area and is well known for their expertise in constructing and engineering pools at the Jersey Shore, to find out more about the latest trends. The Hull family has been building custom gunite pools for three generations and are known for high-quality, durable pools that transform a backyard to a private oasis.
Why have swimming pools become a "must have" at the Jersey Shore?
I grew up thinking the beach was one of the greatest places on earth. Sand, waves and salty breezes were all I needed. It's different now. The home building of the last 50 years has increased the density of people in the small coastal areas. It is more crowded. Having a swimming pool takes your Shore experience to a whole new level. It's a lifestyle upgrade that allows you to enjoy the sun and the water without worrying about beach space, tides or lunches. It's your own personal retreat at the Shore and offers the best of both worlds with a lot more convenience. From quiet morning swims to evening pool parties, your pool becomes the heart of your Shore home. It's a place to unwind, connect with loved ones and create lasting memories without ever leaving your property. A swimming pool also significantly increases your home's value and becomes the hub for family memories. You can use the pool at night, and a heated pool extends the swimming season by a few months.
What are some of the challenges when building a pool at the Shore?
This is where you need an experienced pool builder who is accustomed to construction along the coast. There is a big difference in building pools in the center of the state versus on a barrier island of sand which has shifted over history before residential development. For starters, you never know what you're going to find when you dig. A lot of the land at the Jersey shore is fill, and that fill can include old storm debris such as cars, boats and older home foundations. We encounter lots of "surprises" when building pools at the Shore. We are used to it!
Del Val Pools & Spas is well known for building pools which are "Sandy-proof." This term comes from the carnage from Hurricane Sandy in 2012 which lifted older pools out of the ground and out to sea. We build our pools connected to pilings driven deep into the sand and tied to a reinforced rebar framework and a deep keel which is further strengthened by a custom crafted gunite shell. We over-construct our pools for strength and durability, and three generations of my family have been building pools. There is a lot to be said for that kind of experience.
How does that experience benefit the homeowner?
We have been building pools for decades—more than I care to count. We are constantly learning, adapting and improving. Styles change, technologies advance and building concepts progress. Del Val Pools & Spas is consistently at the forefront of these changes and year after year we have received awards and recognition in a variety of "Best of" categories. A pool is homeowner's vision and it all starts with a conversation. If you want to talk about pools at the Jersey shore, reach out to me directly: Bryan@delvalpools.net.
